It’s been a mild winter so far but with snow forecast for some areas this week, residents should ensure they are prepared.

Christchurch and Banks Peninsula residents should take the opportunity to check emergency supplies in their homes, said Civil Defence Emergency Management Head Alicia Palmer.

“If you haven’t already, now’s a good time to store some extra water and stock up your food supplies. Check you’ve got warm clothing, torches, and any personal medications you might need. Please also check on your neighbours and make sure that they are ready for the snow.”

MetService is predicting sleety showers and possible snow for Christchurch later this week. It says snow could reach low levels about the east of the South Island and a warning for heavy snow is in place for inland South Canterbury south of Fairlie, as well as parts of Southland and Otago.

Snow could approach warning amounts to low levels in Canterbury and the Kaikoura Coast and Ranges on Thursday and Friday.

Ms Palmer said farmers should have alternative power supplies, such as a generator, in case of a power outage. They should also ensure livestock are secure and have a water supply available if there is no power.

Residents should keep up to date with the latest weather and emergency information before travelling longer distances.

There are snow warnings for alpine roads including Arthur’s Pass, Lindis Pass and State Highway 73/Porters Pass.

New Zealand Transport Agency Journey Manager Lee Wright said drivers travelling through alpine passes or travelling in the south of the South Island and inland areas should carry chains and know how to put them on. They should check MetService for updates.

“Chains are for the driver’s and road users’ safety so please ensure you have them and know how to put them on. Allow extra time.”
