Grassroots initiatives which help the city’s climate change goals will receive funding support.
Christchurch City Council approved providing more than 30 organisations with a portion of the $400,000 Sustainability Fund, which helps community, school, social enterprise or business projects that work towards climate change objectives in the Kia tūroa te Ao Ōtautahi Climate Resilience Strategy.
The Fund aims to meet the challenge of climate change through every means available, help the community understand and prepare for the ongoing impacts of climate change, benefit from a just transition to an innovative, low-emission economy and be guardians of our natural environment and taonga.
Groups which will receive funding include Te Manawa Ora Trust for a Pa Whakaoranga Kaupapa Māori Community Garden, the Smith Street Community Garden for a water and carbon retention programme and the New Brighton Community Gardens and Charitable Trust for a young propagating farmers and sustainability hub.
