Water  |  15 Feb 2026

Residents and visitors to areas of New Brighton, Burwood, Wainoni, Aranui and Southshore are being advised to boil their water until further notice after a sample within the zone was found to be contaminated.

Boil water notice lifted

The boil water notice affecting Christchurch’s Rawhiti water supply zone has been lifted.
Christchurch City Council has had three clear days of sampling from the wider Rawhiti zone and isolated the source of the issue so residents in the New Brighton, Burwood, Wainoni, Aranui and Southshore areas no longer need to boil water.
Investigations are still ongoing but we believe it was due to work recently undertaken on the network. The Council has done significant sampling throughout the zone and we are now confident the contamination is isolated to a small area.
Approximately 20 properties will need to keep boiling their water. We will be communicating with these residents directly.
The notice was put in place on Saturday after regular testing detected total coliforms are a group of bacteria commonly found in the environment. Their presence in the water network serves as an indicator of potential contamination and the possible existence of harmful pathogens.

Schools and early childhood

The Ministry of Education has been in touch with early childhood services and schools to ensure their education services remain open during this event.

They have a good plan in place to manage the situation and the Council will provide support to the Ministry where we can.

If parents have questions, they are encouraged to contact their respective schools and centres directly.

Boil water notice Sunday update

Results from sampling in the wider Rawhiti Zone are looking good. However as we have had a further positive result in the same location, the boil water notice is still in place.

The notice will then be lifted once we can provide confidence to Tauamata Arowai that the water is safe to drink. Part of this assessment will be ensuring we also have at least three days of good results.

The community drinking water station at 345 Keyes Road is open so residents in the area can fill containers with chlorine free water. The water at this site has been confirmed safe to drink.

Our focus remains on ensuring everyone is aware of the health risk. Staff and contractors are continuing to investigate possible causes and are undertaking further sampling across the zone.

Sunday 15 February FAQs

What do the latest test result show?

When will the boil water notice be lifted?

It is in place until further notice. The notice will then be lifted once we can provide confidence to Tauamata Arowai that the water is safe to drink. Part of this assessment will be ensuring we also have at least three days of good results.

Will the Council be providing tankers? How can I access water?

Tankers are generally provided where there is no water available.  Boiling water continues to be the best option, alternatively the Keyes Water filling station at 345 Keyes Road is open.  Residents in the area can fill containers with chlorine free water.  The water at this site has been confirmed safe to drink. What caused this?

Staff and contractors are continuing to investigate possible causes and are undertaking further sampling across the zone

Boil water notice in place

Testing in the area showed the presence of bacteria in drinking water which means it is unsafe to drink.

As part of our normal sample programme, we test for E.coli and total coliforms.  The sample showed no E.coli was present, just total coliforms.

Total coliforms are a group of bacteria commonly found in the environment, and their presence in the water network serves as an indicator of potential contamination and the possible existence of harmful pathogens.

All water used for drinking, food preparation, utensil washing, brushing teeth or making ice should be boiled until further notice.

Staff and contractors are in the area undertaking further testing and investigations to understand the cause of the contamination. Until we have further information the boil water notice will remain in place.

Bringing water to the boil is sufficient to kill bugs. If you can’t boil your water then bottled water is the only other option.

The Council has issued text alerts to residents’ cell phones. The text alerts can also be received by people travelling into the areas. Residents are encouraged to share the message with their neighbours.

The boil water notice will be in place until further notice.
