Three Christchurch City Council projects have come out on top at the Civil Contractors New Zealand (CCNZ) Canterbury Awards.

The Te Kaha Surrounding Streets project (Isaac Construction), the Aldwins-Ensors-Ferry Intersection upgrade (Isaac Construction), and the Colombo and Gloucester Street Upgrade (HEB Construction) all received awards at the recent CCNZ ceremony.

Head of Transport and Waste Management Lynette Ellis says winning the awards is acknowledgement of the incredible collaboration, dedication, and expertise that each member of the teams brought to these projects.

“This achievement is a reflection of the of the collective effort that ensured everything came together seamlessly – from design and development through to delivery.”

The Te Kaha Surrounding Streets project won in the Projects over $10 million category.

The works reconfigured the roads surrounding One New Zealand Stadium, upgrading wastewater systems, watermains and landscape areas in preparation for the venue’s completion.

The major street and water network upgrades saw 350,000 cobblestones, 5,176 plants and 5.5km of new pipes laid, and were finished four months ahead of schedule.

The Aldwins-Ensors-Ferry upgrade, set in one of Christchurch’s busiest intersections, won in the Projects with a value of $1 million to $5 million category.

The project involved a complete intersection upgrade, including full excavation to accommodate a 200mm concrete sub-base, road reconstruction, new streetlights, traffic signals and drainage upgrades.

The third award for a Christchurch City Council project was presented to the Colombo and Gloucester Street Upgrade, which won in the Projects with a value of up to $1 million category.

The Central City project had a tight programme working in conjunction with the official opening of the new Court Theatre and the need to maintain access for building contractors.

Ms Ellis says this success was due to the collaborative effort of teams including delivery staff, contractors and support staff.

“The delivery of these projects has resulted in significant improvements to Christchurch’s transport network that are benefiting communities every day, and it’s fantastic to see this success recognised,” Ms Ellis says.
