Christchurch artist Rebecca Robin has come full circle with her music career through Toi Ōtautahi Christchurch Arts.

Rebecca became involved with Toi Ōtautahi at the community arts facility Toi Auaha, and in 2023 joined the Group Incubator Programme for mixed arts.

The following year, she took part in the Waiata Reo Incubator Programme, and at the same time undertook a one-on-one mentorship with producer Greg Haver.

“The Group Incubator was really valuable for me. There were lots of strong talks from experienced artists and industry professionals, along with practical learnings and real opportunities,” Rebecca says.

“It was a supportive space to develop ideas, connect with other creatives, and deepen my understanding of the industry. It felt like a meaningful and worthwhile programme to be part of.”

Rebbeca says she’s seen a real growth in her career through these programmes – she’s now credited as a composer on the track Wairua on Dillastrate’s latest EP, and has had songs feature on Juice TV.

“What feels especially meaningful is that I’m now a resident artist at Toi Auaha through Toi Ōtautahi – the same place where I first participated in the Incubator Programmes.

“Moving from being supported in that space to now creating there as a resident artist feels like a huge full-circle moment for me.”

As part of the residency, Rebecca is developing an upcoming eight-track album reflecting on lived experiences in Christchurch, including the earthquakes and developing her creative practice. Two of the songs on the album came directly out of the Incubator Programme – one is co-composed with Henare Kaa through the Waiata Reo programme, and another grew out of the mentorship process with Greg Haver.

Rebecca’s also looking to run a “Releasing Music in Aotearoa” course this year, to share learnings and help create pathways for other artists.

The Christchurch artist says her advice for anyone considering applying for the Incubator Programme is to be brave and give it a go.

“Every type of artist is welcome here, and there are some really supportive pathways available.

“It’s a great opportunity, no matter where you are in your creative journey.”

Applications for this year’s Toi Ōtautahi Incubator Programme are due at 11.59pm Sunday 15 March. Find out more and apply online.
