Celebrate the 50th year of Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori with Christchurch City Libraries.
Te Wiki began following a single Māori Language Day in 1972 and grew to be a full week by 1975.
This year, Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori will run from 14-20 September.
There’s a range of opportunities to get involved in Māori Language Week 2025, including events and activities on offer across the Christchurch City Libraries network.
Learn about and make your own poi or tītī tōrea at an Afternoon Crafting session at Fendalton Library on 15 September, Te Hāpua: Halswell Centre on 16 September, Aranui Library on 17 September, Papanui Library on 18 September, and Tūranga on 19 September.
Celebrate Te Wiki with Ngā Pakiwaitara (bilingual story times) at Tūranga on 16 September. Learn some kupu hou (new words), reminisce with your tamariki on some of our more nostalgic pukapuka (books) and have some fun with our different waiata (songs) and pukapuka.
Grab a coffee from the café at South Colombo and join us for some Māori language themed kēmu (games), a kōrero (chat) and explore some of our te Reo Māori resources on 17 September, or at Tūranga’s Foundation Café on 19 September.
Come along for a bilingual story time with Whaea Justice and her manuhiri at Matatiki Hornby Centre on 18 September. Fill your wairua (cup) with some new pukapuka and waiata that might take you back in time.
Join us at Tūranga in mahi toi (arts and crafts) and celebrate the whakataukī (proverb) for Te Wiki at He kai kei āku ringa on 19 September.
