Giving loving pooches a second chance at life - that’s the goal of the Christchurch City Council Animal Shelter.
And one the team is achieving having rehomed 45 dogs so far in 2024.
Greyhounds, bull breeds, beardies and pugs are just the beginning when it comes to the 321 dogs that have spent a stay at the Shelter this year.
11-month-old staffy cross, Rosco, spent 26 days in the Shelter before he was adopted into his happy-ever-after family in August.
New owner Kylie says Rosco is just what was missing from her home after recently losing their older dog.
“Putting my old boy to sleep was the hardest thing I have ever had to do,” Kylie says.
“But Rosco is currently helping that healing process just with his extra cuddles. I am grateful we found him and was able to give him a home he deserves.”
Huntaway cross Maya became the fifth member of one lucky family after she was adopted by new owners Hannah and Brad earlier this year.
“We are all enjoying her company so much and she fits perfectly into our family,” says new owner Hannah.
“Maya is happy, energetic, very loving and healthy. We adore her, especially the two children!”
Maya’s new routine sees her walking with the kids to school in the morning, spending some time playing and snoozing in the afternoon before it’s time to collect the kids at the end of the school day.
As an early riser, new owner Brad shares a special bond and says he finds his morning routine more enjoyable with Maya by his side.
Council’s Animal Services Manager Lionel Bridger says the Animal Management team go above and beyond to get as many dogs as possible adopted into new loving homes.
“Whether they’re adopted directly from the Shelter or if they need a little extra help from rescues like Dog Watch and Bull Breed Rescue, we want to get these pups rehomed and we want to get it right,” Mr Bridger says.
Council’s Animal Shelter are at capacity for the number of dogs up for adoption and are desperately looking to rehome the current pups they have.
If you’re after a new pooch, please get in touch with the shelter to help find these good boys and girls new, loving homes.
Dogs for adoption are posted on the Christchurch City Council Facebook page.
