New traffic signals at the intersection of Harewood, Breens and Gardiners roads in Bishopdale were switched on this morning, in time for the new school year.
“The new traffic signals and other safety improvements on Harewood Road will make travelling through the area safer for all road users, including students travelling to and from local schools,” says Planning and Delivery Manager Jacob Bradbury.
“We know these works have been disruptive for local businesses, schools and residents. We want to thank the community for their patience while we’ve made these improvements, particularly during the super week when the intersection was closed.”
In addition to the new traffic signals, the work on and around Harewood Road has included installing a new signalised pedestrian crossing and safety improvements at Harewood School and on Stanleys Road, widening the pedestrian refuge island at the Wooldridge Road intersection and a new pedestrian crossing on Waimakariri Road.
The road safety improvements are being coordinated with upgrades to stormwater and water supply pipes.
“Our transport and three waters teams have coordinated their work so we can take a ‘one pass’ approach – avoiding the need to dig into this section of road twice to carry out the two different pieces of work,” says Mr Bradbury.
Work in the area will continue to 6 March while the remaining pipe replacement work is completed. Some traffic management will remain in place.
