Work on the Knights Stream skate park will start in just a few weeks after resource consent was granted for the project.
The tender was won by Hunter Civil and with consent approved, construction work will start next month. The $350,000 park is due for completion by the end of July, ready for use in spring.
Knights Stream is one of two skate and recreation parks designed for beginner to intermediate level riders planned for the Halswell area.
A decision on resource consent for the other site at Halswell Domain is still pending.
Christchurch City Council Head of Parks Brent Smith says after a lengthy planning process it is very satisfying that work is about to start at Knights Stream.
“We know there are a lot of young people in the local community who are very eager to get out and use these parks so we’re keen to see them built as speedily as possible.”
The design for the Knights Stream Sports Park skate and recreation area includes:
• skate elements such as quarter pipes, timber post skate elements, flow bowl, pump bump, bank and stair set up with china bank.
• A flat open space with street skate elements.
• Seating around the facility and shade shelter.
As part of the overall development of Knights Stream Sports Park there will also be a learn-to-ride facility, a basketball half-court, pavilion and sports fields. These are being developed separately from the skate and recreation area as part of subdivision work.
The Halswell Domain concept design includes a skate bowl, rising quarter pipe, mini ramp, learner ledge along with a pump track, fitness equipment, seating and a shade shelter.
