Contractors will be working 24/7 in a ‘super week’ of construction to speed up the installation of new traffic signals and upgrades to water supply pipes on Harewood Road.
The intersection of Harewood Road, Gardiners Road and Breens Road will be closed from 5pm Sunday 4 January to 5am Monday 12 January.
The current west-bound one-way system on Harewood Road between Watsons Road and Russley Road/State Highway 1 will be in place.
Detours will be in place during super week for all road users.
The work has been scheduled for the quieter holiday period to minimise disruption to local residents, businesses and schools, says Planning and Delivery Manager Jacob Bradbury.
“Scheduling this super week in early January means we can reduce the overall length of the project and get a lot of work done while people are away for the holiday period and the roads are quieter.
“The community has been very supportive of the improvements we’re making on Harewood Road, and we appreciate their continued patience.”
While the Council’s transport and three waters teams have coordinated their work in the area to minimise disruption by taking a ‘one pass’ approach, some disruption is inevitable, said Mr Bradbury.
“Our contractors are working hard to reduce the impact on residents and road users, and have worked closely with local businesses, schools and churches to accommodate their needs as much as possible.”
Routes 8 Port to Port (Airport to Lyttelton), 27 Northwood/Huntsbury and 125 Redwood/Westlake will have detours in place. Temporary bus stops will operate while some permanent stops are closed.
“If you travel on these routes along Harewood Road, please check Metro Info online for details of temporary stops and route changes.”
Over the Christmas period, the intersection and area outside Harewood School will be open as usual, with traffic lanes fully restored and buses will run on their usual routes.
