Introduce your children to the fun of fishing at the Take a Kid Fishing event at The Groynes lakes on Sunday.
The Isaac Conservation and Wildlife Trust, with support from Mt Cook Alpine Salmon, has generously donated hundreds of salmon, which will be released into the lakes at the Groynes so there should be plenty of fish for the kids to catch.
The event is free and is designed for children under the age of 12. It runs from 9am to 1pm.
If you are planning renovations or considering building a new home, then head along to Canterbury Home Show at Christchurch Arena this week for inspiration and advice.
The Home Show is designed specifically to help Cantabrians explore all the options available to them for their project – whether it’s building a new kitchen, renovating their bathroom, or building totally from scratch. The show contains hundreds of products, suppliers and experts all under one roof, ready to discuss any rebuild or renovation project.
The show also offers three full days of seminars that cover everything from home loan acquisition to future-proof building, from asbestos through to colour confidence.
The show is open Friday through to Sunday from 10am to 5pm and admission is free.
Enjoy the laidback atmosphere of the Governors Bay fete.
On Sunday head over the hill to Allandale Domain for the Governors Bay fete. There will be heaps of stalls, delicious food, music, fun activities and displays by the local fire brigade.
The fete is raising money for the local community facilities, including the Governors Bay Community Centre and the swimming pool so come along and enjoy a fun day out.
Entry is by gold coin and the fete runs from 11am to 3pm.
Cashmere’s beautiful Old Stone House is having an open day on Saturday.
The building dates back to 1870 and was built originally to house Sir John Cracroft Wilson’s Indian workers. The building was damaged in the earthquakes, but it has been fully restored so come along and have a nosey.
The Old Stone House is located at 30 Shalamar Drive and the open day runs from 10am to 3pm.
A number of other notable historic properties, including Avebury House and Knox Church, are open this weekend as part of the Christchurch Heritage Festival. Check out the online festival programme for details.

Riccarton Park is hosting the New Zealand National Gem Show this weekend. The show is being hosted by The Canterbury Mineral and
Simply the best.
Lapidary Club and is a chance for the public to see a wide variety of gems, crystals, fossils and minerals. Admission to the show costs $5 for adults and $2 for school-aged children, pre-schoolers are free.
If you’re a fan of Tina Turner make sure you book a ticket for Saturday night’s TINA Simply the Best in the Town Hall.
Featuring the powerful, raspy vocals and thrilling stage presence of Caroline Borole live on stage, complete with band, brass section, backing vocalists and dancers to make this the definitive tribute, the concert will showcase Tina Turner’s hits from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.
