The new sports courts at the Lyttelton Recreation Ground will be named after community stalwart, volunteer and advocate Flora “Flo” McGregor.
The “Flora Courts” will be dedicated at the official opening of the newly revamped Lyttelton Recreation Grounds on Saturday 7 February, from 1-2pm.
When: Saturday 7 February, 1-2pm
Where: Lyttelton Recreation Grounds (3 Godley Quay), at the netball courts
“Flo McGregor was a deeply respected community leader and volunteer, whose work across a range of sporting, cultural and community causes has left a lasting legacy in Lyttelton and beyond.
“Amongst her many contributions, Flo was a driving force behind the inclusion of netball courts at the Recreation Grounds. Naming the courts after her is a fitting tribute,” says Councillor for Banks Peninsula Tyrone Fields.
The Lyttelton Recreation Ground Reserve Management Committee (LRGRMC) recommended naming the courts after Flora McGregor, who passed away in 2023.
The proposal was supported by Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke, Lyttelton Netball and the McGregor whanau. Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū Banks Peninsula Community Board approved the proposal at their meeting on 2 February.
The official dedication will take place from 1-2pm on Saturday 7 February, as part of the Lyttelton Three Schools Reunion events running over Waitangi Weekend.
The Council’s Lyttelton Recreation Ground redevelopment project finished late last year and involved installing a new multi-sport zone, building a new change pavilion and overhauling the rugby fields.
