New Performing Arts Precinct car park open

A new carpark is now open for the public to use on Gloucester Street.

Located within Te Whare Tapere The Performing Arts Precinct, the carpark holds 61 parks, including five accessible parks.

The new carpark will provide easier access to the precinct for audience members, and visitors to the central city.

To ensure a focus on supporting nearby venues, the Christchurch City Council granted a license to operate the carpark to a charitable company owned by The Court Theatre, Isaac Theatre Royal, and The Piano. 

Parking operations will be managed by Mainland Parking on behalf of the company. Payment can be made by app or the pay stations onsite and special night rates will be available for patrons attending events in the precinct.

Head of Facilities and Property Bruce Rendall was pleased to see the carpark open this week, after on-going feedback from stakeholders of the precinct regarding the need for parking for mobility-impaired visitors.

“We’ve been working closely with The Court Theatre, Isaac Theatre Royal and The Piano to ensure the carpark meets the needs of their patrons and improve accessibility for visitors.”

An open space beside The Court Theatre provides a green area for public use, and an activation space to be used for performances and educational opportunities in the precinct.  This connects to the open space beside The Piano, allowing access between Armagh and Gloucester Streets.

The site has been developed on a temporary basis allowing benefits to the public and retaining the land for future performing arts purposes.
