New play space at Lyttelton’s Naval Point now open

A ‘sinking ship’, monkey bars and dinghy are all features of a new play space at Naval Point.

Christchurch City Council Manager of Community Parks Al Hardy says the play space took around two months to build.

“We’ve worked with the Scouts to develop the plans, and it’s shaping up to be a really fun place for tamariki to come and play, explore nature and learn about some local history.”

The play space is located next to the Scout Den and newly revamped Lyttelton Recreation Grounds. It was created as part of the Council’s wider Naval Point Te Nukutai o Tapoa Redevelopment project.

Scout Leader Ruth Targus says the play space “will become pivotal” to the activities offered to local Cubs and Scouts.

“The boat will be great for teaching new Scouts boat structure and drills, which go towards badges. Cubs and scouts use the space so they will be encouraged to be guardians of it,” says Ms Targus.

Much of the play space was created using reclaimed wood donated by Lyttelton Port Company.

“We’re grateful to Lyttelton Port Company for donating the timber from the inner harbour jetties. The reclaimed timber has been used to build the sinking ship, benches, mock canons, and a skating rail amongst other things,” says Mr Hardy.

Other historic features include refurbished wharf bollards, marine piles, and a ship’s propellor. 

“It’s brilliant, not only is it recycling but also fabulous history to talk about with the groups,” says Ms Targus.
