Do you know someone who gives up their time to help others or goes above and beyond the call of duty for Christchurch and its people?

Each year our city benefits from the service of volunteers, and we recognise these values contributions with our annual Christchurch City Council Civic Awards.

Submissions are open to nominate those local heroes, whether it comes from an individual, society, association, club or group – anyone can nominate a worthy candidate for consideration.

Christchurch City Council Civic and International Relations Manager Duncan Sandeman says the Civic Awards offer a great opportunity to acknowledge those in our community who have gone the extra mile.

“We want to share the stories of Christchurch residents who have generously donated their time and energy to benefit others,” says Mr Sandeman.

“This is the ideal chance to put forward those individuals and groups who have made such a big difference to so many others, as well as to the environment and community well-being.”

Recipients from the previous ceremony include the youngest ever awardee, 15-year-old climate activist Lucy Alice Gray.

Ms Gray learned of climate change at age ten and was so appalled that she decided to do something about it.

Beginning with making small everyday changes such as what she ate and how she travelled, this passion grew into factors such as contributing to the development of climate change curriculum for schools and advocating for climate action alongside Dame Jacinda Ardern and 6th Minister for Climate Change James Shaw.

“It’s time to thank those selfless acts through this recognition,” says Mr Sandeman.

Nominations can be made for individuals and organisations whose volunteer work has had a major impact on Ōtautahi Christchurch and has boosted the quality of life in the city.
