Christchurch is electing a new Council in October, and nominations are now open.
Nominations are open for Mayor, 16 Councillors and 37 members for the city’s six community boards.
To stand for election, you must be a New Zealand citizen and enrolled on the Parliamentary electoral roll. You do not need to live in the area in which you wish to stand.
Election Officer Warwick Lampp says decisions made by Council affect everything from public transport and parks to housing, climate action, and community services.
“The opportunity to represent your community in the city’s decision-making only comes around once every three years. Nominations are now open for those who are keen to step forward and help to shape their city’s future.”
Nomination forms are available online here or can be picked up in person at Council customer service hubs.
The Christchurch City Council website has a range of information about the election process and about the roles and responsibilities of elected members.
Nominations are open until noon on 1 August, but candidates should get their nomination in as early as possible.
Completed forms can be dropped off in person to the deputy electoral officer at the Civic Offices, 53 Hereford Street or emailed to nominations@ccc.govt.nz
Voting papers for the election will be mailed out from Tuesday 9 September. Voting closes at noon on Saturday 11 October.
Completed voting documents can be posted or returned to vote bins that will be located at Council facilities and other locations in the community.
