The Council’s Resource Recovery team and site operator EcoCentral are urging residents to prioritise safety at the EcoDrop transfer stations to protect themselves, their families and staff.

Resource Recovery Manager Dr Alec McNeil says dangerous incidents have been increasing at the three transfer stations across the city.

“We’ve recently seen an increase in numbers of children getting out of cars as well as quite a few residents getting into the pit itself,” Dr McNeil says.

“This is extremely dangerous as there is heavy machinery operating in the pit at all times and hazardous debris in the area.”

Over the last year there were 116 incidents of children being out of the car at the transfer stations, and 28 of residents being in the pit.

“Your safety is our priority, and there’s a few guidelines to follow to protect yourself, your family and our staff,” Dr McNeil says.

Children and pets must be kept inside your vehicle at all times.

The refuse pit should not be entered under any circumstances. If you accidentally drop something into the pit, signal the loader operator from a safe distance or locate a staff member and the team will assist.

Suitable, fully enclosed footwear must be worn when using transfer station facilities.

Hazardous items such as e-waste, batteries, paints, solvents and gas bottles should be taken to an EcoDrop Resource Recovery Centre where they can be disposed of free of charge.

Ensure your trailer load is secured properly and never ride on a trailer while onsite.

New signage has been installed at the transfer stations to help address safety issues, and all customers coming across the weighbridge will receive an information flyer.

“Transfer stations are busy places with high levels of traffic from both operational vehicles and other vehicles using the facility,” Dr McNeil says.

“Please stay alert, be aware of your surroundings, and follow all signage and staff instructions.”
