Another band of heavy rain could hit Christchurch and Banks Peninsula on Saturday night.
“It is possible that we could get another 50mm of rain in some parts of the districts which unfortunately may result in some more surface flooding,’’ says Christchurch City Council Head of Three Waters Helen Beaumont.
“We have begun releasing water from the storage basins in the upper Heathcote to make sure that we have the capacity to cope with more rain. We also have staff and contractors out across the district checking the stormwater network to ensure it is operating as it should.
“We can’t check every grate in the city so we would really appreciate it if residents could spend a few minutes while the weather is fine checking the grates outside their property. If there are leaves blocking the grates, we would appreciate it if you could scoop them up and put them in your green wheelie bin.
“If you live in an area that is prone to flooding, please take sensible precautions to protect your property and your belongings.
“We are all hoping that the rain will pass without causing any further issues but residents should be prepared for the possibility of more flooding and slips, particularly given how saturated the ground is from the rain earlier this week,’’ Ms Beaumont says.
