Mitre10 Sparks is set to dazzle in 2026 with a special Valentine’s Day-themed extravaganza.

Showcasing the stellar talents of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra (CSO) the free, open-air event returns to North Hagley Park on Saturday 14 February.

With conductor Tom Rainey at the helm, the CSO will join with guest artists to present a sparkling evening of contemporary and classical music based around the theme of love.

Now in its 43rd year, the collaboration between the CSO, Christchurch City Council and guest performers continues to attract tens of thousands of people, making it one of the most popular events in the Council’s calendar, says Council Events and Arts Manager Lucy Blackmore.

“Last year we had 24,000 people attending Mitre10 Sparks – it’s Ōtautahi’s favourite open-air music and entertainment event that’s completely free. We’ll have a range of exciting food offerings on site and people are also welcome to bring their own picnics, and of course blankets and chairs.

“One of the reasons Mitre10 Sparks is so loved is the range of music that is played; people can expect a colourful mix of classical and contemporary compositions," Ms Blackmore says.

“So gather your family and friends to enjoy a summer night of beautiful music with a romantic twist and a spectacular fireworks finale, all in the stunning surrounds of North Hagley Park.”

Entry opens at 5.30pm with live music on stage from 6.25pm.

The main show starts at 7.30pm as the CSO take the stage and a fireworks display choreographed to music wraps up the evening at around 9.40pm.

For those being dropped off at the park, there will be a drop-off point on Park Terrace between Kilmore Street and Armagh Street.

For cyclists, bike stands are opposite the roundabout over the Armagh Street bridge. Mobility parking is available on Chester Street West.
