Christchurch City Council has signed off on a spatial plan for the Botanic Gardens.

The spatial plan was put together last year to help everyone understand what the future of the Botanic Gardens  might look like.

A spatial plan has been approved for the Botanic Gardens.

It illustrates how the existing components of the Botanic Gardens and the capital projects defined in the 2007 Hagley Park and Botanic Gardens Master Plan and the Botanic Gardens Management Plan can be woven together to enrich the visitor experience and improve the operation and management of the Botanic Gardens.

“Due to the earthquakes many of the projects provided for in the Hagley Park and Botanic Gardens Master Plan have remained unfunded. The spatial plan has allowed us to have a fresh look at how those projects will fit together,’’ said Council’s Acting Head of Parks Brent Smith.

“The feedback we got from the community on the spatial plan was generally supportive. People were particularly enthusiastic about projects such as the new bridge across the Avon to the Visitor Centre, the new conservatory complex and the play landscape.

“With the Council having now endorsed the spatial plan, the next step is to try and get funding allocated in the 2018-28 Long Term Plan for some of these projects. The public will be consulted as part of that process,’’ Mr Smith said.
