How can Christchurch become a truly walkable city?

That’s what the first Christchurch Conversation of 2025 will consider - how a truly walkable city could make for a vibrant, sustainable and liveable city.

Presented by Te Pūtahi Centre for Architecture and City-Making, Steps to a Walkable Ōtautahi is being held from 6-7.30pm on Tuesday 15 July in the TSB Space at Tūranga.

The session will include quick-fire presentations, a panel discussion and Q & A with contributions from Carina Duke (Living Streets Aotearoa), Jeanette Ward (transport engineer, Abley) and Dr Anna Stevenson (public health physician, National Public Health Te Whatu Ora).

Director Dr Jessica Halliday said improving the walkability of Ōtautahi is key to creating the best city we can.

“All of us use footpaths as we move around the city. Studies show that increased walkability means greater happiness, lower carbon emissions, improved health, increased local spending and cheaper infrastructure.”

“This Christchurch Conversation explores the benefits and barriers to walkability in Ōtautahi and asks what we can do to enhance walking in all areas of our city."

This is a free public event, but bookings are required. You can join in person or online.

The Christchurch Conversations 2025 programme is supported by the Christchurch City Council through the Sustainability Fund.
