It’s a busy time of year on the Port Hills as lambing season gets underway.
Signs are being put up at the entrances to Council reserves on the Port Hills, reminding the public that lambing is in progress and that dog owners must keep their dogs on a leash at all times or risk a $300 fine.
“Enjoy your walks but please respect the farmers and their livestock at this special time of year," says Christchurch City Council Regional Parks Manager Paul Devlin.
"Dogs must be kept on a lead, and if you are on a mountain bike, slow down or dismount if ewes and lambs are nearby. New lambs are especially vulnerable to people and dogs.
“We appreciate the cooperation of the public during the early weeks of lambing.”
Anyone who sees livestock looking unwell, lambs by themselves for a long period of time or people touching or bothering the livestock should call the Council on 0800 800 169.
All Council tracks remain open during lambing season, which lasts until mid-October.
