New traffic signals at the intersection of Wigram and Hayton roads will help meet the needs of a growing community and new facilities in the area.

The four-way signalised intersection will replace the existing three-way priority-controlled intersection, helping to improve traffic flow and safety for road users.

A new shared path will also be built on the northern side of Wigram Road, connecting the existing path from where it currently terminates at Hayton Reserve along to the Wigram-Hayton intersection.

“This will improve pedestrian and cyclist access to the Little River Link cycleway and provide a safer environment for everyone who uses this busy arterial route,” says Jacob Bradbury, Christchurch City Council Transport Planning and Delivery Manager.

“We will also seal the existing access road to the Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub (Ngā Puna Wai Access Road) via the Christchurch Southern Motorway underpass and connect it to the signalised intersection.”

Since it opened in 2018, Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub has continued to develop, with the opening of the Netsal Centre in 2023. An artificial sports hub is also planned for development on the Ngā Puna Wai North piece of land adjacent to Wigram Road.

“Providing an alternative formal entrance to the Ngā Puna Wai site will provide for better traffic flow and complement events being held on the site,” says Mr Bradbury.

The existing Little River Link Crossing on Ngā Puna Wai Access Road will be upgraded to a raised dual crossing and shifted away from the underpass, to improve visibility between cyclists and vehicles.

Work on the project is due to begin on Monday 16 February and expected to take approximately three months to complete.
