From the roof to the grounds – and everywhere in between – the city’s new stadium is rapidly coming together.
A new video released today provides a look at construction progress at One New Zealand Stadium at Te Kaha.
In the entrance of the western stand, escalators, stairs, lifts and the glass façade are all in place.
“Fit-out works are continuing on all four levels of the western stand, with kitchens, bathrooms and back-of-house areas now essentially complete,” says Christchurch City Council Project Director Kent Summerfield.
The 23 corporate suites are also nearing completion, with wall linings, joinery and ceilings in place.
“One of the major focuses on site for the team continues to be the installation of the roof cladding,” says Mr Summerfield.
The stadium will be covered, with much of the roof made of a clear material called Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE), that will let natural light shine through to support turf growth.
“The solid portion of the roof to the south comprises of two layers. Installation of the base layer is now fully complete, and the team have commenced installation of the top layer,” says Mr Summerfield.
Another milestone for the project, which is now less than one year until completion, is landscaping preparations getting started.
“The project sits across three city blocks, so this represents a significant portion of work,” says Mr Summerfield.
The stadium grounds will feature public green spaces, gardens and paved areas.
The works will tie in with the Council’s Te Kaha Surrounding Streets project, which has seen the water and roading network around the stadium undergo significant upgrades over the past year.
“Despite the recent wet weather, the team continue to make great progress, and we remain on track for an opening in April 2026 and on budget,” says Mr Summerfield.
