Water and roading infrastructure in the city’s northwest is being upgraded to make sure these essential services continue to meet the needs of our growing communities.

Starting early next year, pipe replacement and transport projects in the area will get underway as part of a coordinated work programme spanning two years.

“By combining pipe replacement and transport projects, we’re delivering smarter, safer and more cost-efficient improvements,” says General Manager City Infrastructure Brent Smith.

“We know road works can be frustrating. That’s why we’ve carefully planned our programme to reduce disruption, keep traffic flowing, and get out of the way as quickly as possible. Although the full programme spans two years, disruption at specific locations will in most cases be no more than a few months.”

Ageing wastewater and water supply pipes will be replaced and, in some cases, upsized to meet increasing demand.

A new separated cycleway will be built on Condell and Matsons Avenues, connecting the recently constructed cycleway on Aorangi Road to Harewood Road as part of the NorWest Arc cycleway, and on the north side of Harewood Road.

New signalised pedestrian crossings on Harewood Road will make it safer for pedestrians. Street renewals and resurfacing will improve safety and traffic flow on Condell Avenue, Matsons Avenue and Harewood Road.

Work is due to start in January 2026, with water pipes – including mains and submains – being replaced in Morrison Avenue, Sawyers Arms Road, La Perouse Place, Langdons Road and Harewood Road.

The work on Harewood Road will be from Harris Crescent to Crofton Road, excluding the intersection with Gardiners and Breens Roads, as those pipes are being replaced as part of a related project that got underway earlier this month.

“We’ve spoken with some of the key retailers in the area to assure them we’re mindful of the impact on them and their customers, and that we’ll keep them informed throughout the programme,” Mr Smith said.

“Council staff will work closely with our contractors to make sure businesses, residents and other road users know what is happening in the area and the traffic management plans in place for each project.”
