Things to do  |  13 Sep 2024

Looking for things to do this weekend? Here's your guide to free or low cost activities in Christchurch.

Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori

Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori will be running from Saturday 14 September to Saturday 21 September, and there’s plenty of opportunities for Cantabrians to get involved, including events and activities across the Christchurch City Libraries network.

Dive into the competitive world of wharewhare (Bingo), look into the fun of the card game Euchre, celebrate the wiki with a surprise movie, join us for Ngā Pakiwaitara/Bilingual Storytimes, come along for Māori language themed games, learn about and make your own poi, and take part in a colouring competition.

Moon Cake Festival

Celebrate the Moon Cake Festival this Saturday with a diverse lineup of cultural activities aimed at fostering community connections. Enjoy performances like the traditional Chinese waist drum dance, the elegant Cheongsam Qipao fashion show, and serene Tai Chi demonstrations. Participate in activities like Chinese knot bracelet making, calligraphy and lantern crafting.

The Moon Cake Festival will be on from 2 – 4pm Saturday at the Richmond Community Garden, 235 River Road. No bookings required, free entry.

Church Fair

Grab a bite to eat while rummaging through a wide selection of stalls at the Fair at St Mark’s Anglican church on Saturday morning. Stalls will be stocked with books, cakes, toys, jams and preserves, china, linen, plants, recycled clothing and more.

Stalls will take cash and EFTPOS. The Church is located at 101 Opawa Road, and the market will be on from 8.30am – Midday.

Rising Stars Spring Fiesta

Do you have a special talent to share? Reach out to secure your spot at the Rising Stars Spring Fiesta at Riverside Market. This event provides a stage for you to shine and showcase your skills in a supportive and vibrant environment.

Whether it’s music, dance, art or any other talent, this is your moment to step into the spotlight and impress the community with your abilities. The public are invited to attend the performances from 6 – 8pm Saturday.

Ōtautahi Youth Mākete

Powered by Kaiwhakatere and Te Aukaha, the Ōtautahi Youth Mākete is back with another market for stallholders aged 12 to 24. This event is about giving young people a platform to bring their small businesses to the public.

Stalls on the day include jewellery, art prints, crochet, crafts, pottery, plants, baked goods, photography, pounamu, books, clothes and live music. The market will be at Papa Hou Level 1 Theatre at 4 Rolleston Avenue from 10am – 3pm Sunday. Keen to have a stall? Register online.
