Christchurch City Libraries’ reading challenge is in bloom for summer 2025.
Running through December to the end of January, the Mānuka Stories programme encourages tamariki (children) to read and listen to stories, visit a library and get involved in events throughout the warmer months.
Each activity completed earns a sticker and once the entry form is complete, entrants go in the draw to win some prizes.
Acting Head of Libraries and Information Rosie Levi said the challenge has had a refresh, launching in 2025 with a new name – Mānuka Stories.
“The mānuka signifies the connection we have as people to the whenua (land). The environment was seen as the ultimate storyteller for our ancestors so the mānuka is a reflection of that relationship.”
“It requires us to nurture and care for the mānuka, just as storytelling and reading does for our own learning and growth,” she said.
“The summertime element is reflected through the flowering season of the mānuka which is between December and January - when the mānuka is in bloom, it’s time to read.”
A series of events will also be held in Libraries throughout summer, including the Mānuka Storygrove exhibition at Tūranga and Mānuka Storytimes at the Art Gallery.
“There are so many other events being held at all community libraries around the network, and the Outreach Van will also be on the road visiting a number of pools and parks – you won’t miss us,” Ms Levi said.
“It’s the perfect opportunity for children and their families to head into a library, grab a book or take part in an activity and go in the draw to win some prizes.”
