Local body elections  |  9 Sep 2025

Voting papers for October’s local body elections will soon be arriving in the letter boxes of enrolled voters.

“Residents who have enrolled to vote should expect voting papers to arrive in their letter boxes from today until 22 September,” says Christchurch City Council Electoral Officer Warwick Lampp.

Voting opens on Tuesday 9 September and closes at noon on Saturday 11 October.

“Each enrolled voter will receive an information and candidate profiles booklet, a voting paper and a pre-paid return envelope. Voters will be able to choose a Mayoral candidate, a ward councillor and community board members and Environment Canterbury councillors in their ward.”

Each elector, after receiving their voting document, should complete it, seal it in the return postage-paid envelope and post or deliver it to a vote bin. Electors at the same address may receive their voting documents on different days.

When posting, voting documents should be posted no later than 5pm on Tuesday 7 October to guarantee delivery before the close of voting.

If hand delivered, completed voting documents can be returned to Christchurch City Council Civic Offices, 53 Hereford Street, and open Christchurch City Council libraries, customer service hubs, recreation and sports centres and other locations in the community.

Some customer service hubs may not be open on election day.

Locations of vote bins where voters can return their papers will be included in voting documents.

People who are eligible to vote but who do not receive a voting paper in the post are able to request and complete a special vote.

Anyone who is not able to complete a postal vote independently due to disability is invited to contact the Elections team at elections@ccc.govt.nz or phone 03 941 8581.

The preliminary results of the local body elections will be available on the afternoon of election day, Saturday 11 October.
