Christchurch’s biggest multicultural event Culture Galore will be held at a new location this year.

The free, family-friendly festival is being held for the first time at the Multicultural Recreation and Community Centre next to the Hagley Park netball courts, on Saturday 21 March from midday until 4pm.

“The centre has plenty of space to wander, watch, eat and relax, it’s the perfect and appropriate place to explore and enjoy the festival,” says Head of Community Support and Partnerships John Filsell.

The event will start with a karakia by mana whenua, followed by speeches from the Mayor Phil Mauger and Jimmy Chen, the centre’s patron.

The stage will be busy with 23 different groups performing, while a variety of workshops from Lion Dance to Tai Chi to a Boba Bubble Tea Ceremony will be held inside the centre. There will also be 20 information stalls on display, showcasing the diversity of cultures in Ōtautahi Christchurch.

The festival is also a food lover’s dream, with freshly made shawarma, juicy dumplings, spicy tteokbokki and more all available from the more than 40 stalls on site.

Mr Filsell says people are being encouraged to either bike or bus to the event, if possible, as parking is limited.

“There will be spot prizes for commuters who use these different methods of travel. There will also be a bike valet service so attendees can relax knowing their cycles are being watched and will be waiting for them when they return.”

Entry is free to the smoke, vape and alcohol-free event, with dogs also welcome but must be on a leash. Most food and craft stalls will be cash only.
